In the Bible, the Holy Spirit is referred to with personal pronouns like “He” and “Him,” rather than “it.” He is described as having emotions, such as grief and joy. He can be lied to and insulted. He teaches, guides, and comforts believers. All of these characteristics point to the fact that the Holy Spirit is not a mere force or energy, but a divine person with a distinct personality and will.
The Importance of Understanding the Personhood of the Holy Spirit
This is important because it shapes the way we relate to the Holy Spirit. We don’t just tap into him as a power source; we interact with him as a friend, a helper, and a guide.

In Romans 8:11, Paul writes, “If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you.” This means that the same power that raised Jesus from the dead is at work within us, transforming us from the inside out.
The Holy Spirit as Our Teacher and Guide
